The Best Troop Compositions TH5 to TH11

Find The Best Troop Composition For YOU

There are dozens of different attacking compositions out there at your disposal – and most of them have dozens of variations. If you’re not sure what attacking composition to use, it is probably because you are lost in the jungle when you search online. Each composition, especially on YouTube, claims to be the best and guarantee to get you everything. The truth is, you need to know what different attacking compositions will help you achieve your goals. Only then can you find one that fits and start using different variations of it until you have the one that fulfills what you’re after. That’s what I want to show you in this post to help you make more out of your attacks – you’ll never get what you want if you use the wrong tools (troops).

Different Troop Compositions, Different Purposes

If you search for “the best attacking composition” online you’ll be lost. Simply because there isn’t THE BEST, there are lots out there that work for their individual purpose. Before you go out and start trying new compositions, you should define, for yourself, a clear goal to accomplish.
Healing Spell versus Inferno Tower
If you start trying out new attacking styles, you will quickly recognize that it takes time and resources to get proficient. My rough rule of thumb is that you need 10 attacks to get the basics, 100 to be confident in using it and 500 to be perfect using it. You see how trying them out is like a walk in the dessert? If you’re willing to try a new troop composition, you should use one that will help towards your goal instead of wasting your time and resources on a style that you will not use long term.

What Do You Want To Do With The Troop Composition

First of all, you need to define what you want to do with the new attacking style. Do you want to farm all kinds of resources? Do you want to farm Gold or Dark Elixir? Do you want to Trophy Push? Do you need a better troop composition for Clan Wars? How many daily attacks do you want to make?
You see there’s a lot you need to know about your own goals. In this post I want to show you the general attacking styles in an overview and how the basic version works. Most importantly, I want to show which style is perfect to do specific things.
To prevent confusion – of course you can use an attacking composition that will reward lots of Trophies while also farming resources because the League Bonus will  add a lot of loot. BUT if you’re just looking for resources you should use an attacking style that is cheaper while still yielding lots of loot. Keep in mind, if you’re able to do many daily attacks, you’ll want a quickly trained army so you can perform as many as possible.

Town Hall 5 Troop Compositions

If you’re TH5 I can recommend 2 attacking strategies. One is for Farming and one is for Trophy Pushing and, more important, Clan Wars.

TH 5 Farming Troop Composition

If you farm you need a quick and cheap army and don’t need to pay attention to the League Bonus. You’ll be able to find bases stuffed with loot so the League Bonus is nothing that will make the profit margin change. Simply train Archers and Barbarians, 50/50, and use the very popular BARCH (Barbarian + ARCHer) composition.

Town Hall 5 Clan War & Trophy Push Army Composition
Trophy Pushing should only be performed for one single purpose if you’re Town Hall 5 – getting the Achievement Gems for the additional Builder. However I can assume you’re also participating in Clan Wars with your Clan, so you need to have the skill and composition to get 3 Stars there as well. I recommend you use Giants with Wall Breakers and Archers. You can also add Wizards or Barbarians, but that’s only a personal taste.
Stay away from Balloons! They are very weak and expensive/slow to train. Balloons are only useful if they are maxed out, so focus on the Giants and upgrade them as often as possible. They will be your 3 Star Combo for quite a few Town Hall Levels!

Town Hall 6 Troop Compositions

There’s not that much changed between TH5 and TH6. If you farm, you should still use the BARCH setup.
For Trophy Pushing and Clan War attacks you now have the ability to include Healers. At this point it doesn’t make a big difference if you do Giant Raids with or without Healers. The above video shows that it’s possible with or without. However, I would reccomend adding Healers because this will be a troop composition you can use for the next 2 Town Hall Levels. Perfecting this skill at TH6 will help you later in the game.
This video also shows you great ways to include Spells in your attacks.

Town Hall 7 Troop Compositions

TH7 increases the number of possible troop compositions and also introduces more complex bases. Don’t get confused, the classics are working great in 2016.

TH7 Farming Troops

The everlasting BARCH works best for farming. It’s cheap and very fast to train.
Attention! If you’re able to do lots of attacks you might want to add Minions and use BAM (Barbarians + Archer + Minions). You can train your army faster, but it will cost you Dark Elixir. If you do lots of attacks, you’ll make up for it; otherwise stick with BARCH!

TH7 Trophy Pushing & Clan War Troop Compositions

The almighty Dragon is here. I remember when I was a fresh Town Hall 7 and trained Dragons right away. In my defense, that was the time when Jorge Yao made the Leaderboards with mass Dragon attacks and dominated for months. There are three reasons I don’t recommend you to use mass Dragon attacks at TH7, not even for Clan War:
  • Low Level Dragons suck, they really do
  • They are so slow to train and cost a small fortune each time
  • Without enough Spells they are not very efficient
Also stay away from the Balloons! They are still not upgraded enough to be a good attacking style.
Giant + Healer is still the best composition to use. I know they are getting lame after using for months now but, they are still the fastest and cheapest way to 3-Star bases. Learn as much as you can about troop pathing, Trap prediction and handling different troops AI. That’s the knowledge you’ll need later in the game.

Town Hall 8 Troop Compositions

The everlasting BARCH works best for farming. It’s cheap and very fast to train.
Attention! If you’re able to do lots of attacks you might want to add Minions and use BAM (Barbarians + Archer + Minions). You can train your army faster, but it will cost you Dark Elixir. If you do lots of attacks, you’ll make up for it; otherwise stick with BARCH!

TH8 Trophy Pushing & Clan War Attacking Troop Compositions

You have 2 very strong attacking compositions you can use:

Town Hall 9 Troop Compositions

I recommend using this farming technique here (Goblin Knife):

TH9 Clan War and Trophy Pushing Troop Compositions

If you want to 3-Star other TH9 Bases in Clan War or in Trophy Pushing, you can either use Hog Rider, Dragons, LavaLoonian or GoWiWi/GoWiPe.
If your Heroes are not upgraded very much (Level 10 or lower), you should focus on Hog Rider or mass Dragon attacks. The others requires Heroes Level 20 to work best.

Town Hall 10 & Town Hall 11 Troop Compositions

Farming with BARCH is not really working at TH10 anymore. You can do it and still get loot, but you will have to do A LOT of nexting until you find a base with outside Storages & Collectors with substantial loot.
There are two strategies you can use, depending if you’re farming Dark Elixir or Gold/Elixir on TH10/TH11.
Farming Dark Elixir works best with Goblins, Giants & Jump Spell:
Farming regular resources works great using Balloons. I have done it for a month now and get 300-400k each time with an army prep time of about 90 minutes! It’s not the best way to farm Dark Elixir, because you have to invest some for the Minions. In the end you will make a profit in Dark Elixir, however, the above strategy makes you more Dark Elixir (but less Gold & Elixir)

Clan War / Trophy Pushing Troop Compositions for TH10 and TH11

You can only use LavaLoonion or Bowler/Miner compositions, they’re the only strategies strong enough to push Trophies or gain serious War Stars for your Clan:

Conclusion

You see there are literally tons of different attacking strategies, but once you define your goal, there’s only a handful that will serve you best. Know what your building before you pick the tools. The videos I linked are very good basic guides, but once you get deeper into the specific attacking compositions, you’ll see there are lots of variations.  Youtube is a great resource to further explore these options. Hope this helps you on your way to success in Clash of Clans
